SECTORAL UMBRELLA ORGANISATIONS
The NEDC (National Economic Development Council) has asked the Tonga Chamber of Commerce to facilitate the process of setting up single umbrella organisations to represent the main economic sectors in the economy.
The Chamber recognizes that having single organisations representing the interest of our main sectors will benefit the businesses in the sectors, Chamber has therefore agreed to facilitate this process and to contribute a total of $10,000 towards the cost.
NEDC has agreed to fund the major cost of this process. A sub-committee has been formed to facilitate the process, and regularly report and liaise with NEDC. The sub-committee will be advertising very shortly for a Project Executive to assist with this important work. A timeline of 3-6 months has been set.
Benefits of having a single cohesive organisation representing a sector include:
- easier to develop & maintain close relationship between sectors and their counterpart government agency,
- allow quicker feedback to government on impacts of new and planned policy and legislation,
- identify & work with government to clear impediments in developing a private sector led economy.
