Tonga Power Limited – Electricity Tariff Increase – October 2009

Notes for Journalists

Following six months of continuous diesel price increases through the Tonga Competent Authority, the Electricity Commission has approved a 20.36 seniti per kWh increase in the price of electricity effective from the October 2009 meter readings.

The new standard electricity tariff will be 83.14 seniti per kWh for electricity consumed on all four island networks in Tongatapu, Vava’u Ha’apai and ‘Eua.

The electricity tariff was last reviewed in May 2009, and since that period the price of diesel has significantly increased as a direct result of the rise in the landed cost.

The non-fuel component of the electricity tariff remains unchanged as the management and staff of Tonga Power control expenditure.

Tonga Power continues to reinvest in the business and is purchasing two new 600 kW generators for Vava’u with the two existing 300 kW units being relocated to Ha’apai and ‘Eua to eliminate their current peak load shortfall. In addition, Tonga Power is upgrading the distribution network on all four islands to improve the reliability and service to customers.

The company is also working closely with Government and International agencies to gain the funds to reconstruct existing village networks to reduce lossages and explore renewable energy opportunities to lower our dependency on imported diesel and the unit cost of electricity.

Electricity tariffs are regulated by the Electricity Act and administered by the Electricity Commission. The tariff adjustment is determined by a process set down in the Concession Agreement between Tonga Power Limited and Electricity Commission. The Competent Authority is the Tongan Government Agency which sets the landed price that Tonga Power must pay for diesel used in the generation of electricity.

TCCI September Events

• We announces our next Advanced Accounting & Accounting Software training supported by NZAid and MOTEYS.  The tentative dates for this training are from 28^th September – 2^nd October 2009 from 9:00am – 1:00pm on QuickBooks & 1:30pm - 4:30pm on MYOB at the Pacific Management Consultants training facility.  The goal of the training is to provide attendees with new skills which will result in an improvement in the operation and efficiency of their business activities. • TCCI has confirmed 4 participants for the Training of Trainers (TOT) using the CEFE Approach for MSME from the 22^nd September – 9^th October, 2009.  This is fully funded by the Commonwealth Secretariat in collaboration with the Community Education Training Centre (CETC) of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).  CEFE Certificates are internationally recognised and will be presented to participants at the end of the course. 

Ø       The course allows the participants i.e. trainers to understand and implement a unique approach found by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) to be effective in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of potential and existing entrepreneurs in over 75 countries around the world. The approach is known as the Competency Based Economies through the Formation of Entrepreneurs (CEFE).  CEFE uses experiential learning techniques to train individuals on skills needed to run a business successfully. It is a fun way of adult learning that increases the retention rate and is, therefore, more effective. Please be advised that this training is POSTPONED until further notice.
