'TONGA TOPS WORLD BANK SURVEY!'

‘Business Advantage Tonga’ published as Tonga moves to top of Pacific ‘Doing Business’ rankings.  The publication follows the release last month of the World Bank’s latest Doing Business rankings, which show Tonga has overtaken Fiji as the easiest place to do business in the Pacific, as measured by the Work Bank’s 10 criteria.

New Zealand affirms support for Tonga Private Sector.

 Hon. John Keys the Prime Minister of New Zealand addressed the Tonga Private Sector at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre on Tuesday 7^th July at 4:30pm.  This session was hosted by the Tonga New Zealand Business Association.

Hon. John Keys affirmed NZ’s support of the Tonga Private Sector.  In his address he expressed the increase of New Zealand’s assistance to Tonga of 16 million each year.  He explained that this amount would later increase to 18 million with the focus of ensuring that the government of Tonga is well resourced for economic development. 

New Zealand is adamant on sustainable economic development and wants  Tonga like the rest of the Pacific to grow and flourish.

Following his address the representatives of the Private Sector were given an opportunity to present from their respective sectors.

The Private Sectors were asked to speak on the following topics;

i)                    Successes and challenges of your sector

ii)                  Are you feeling the global recession?

iii)                Relationships (if any) with NZ or NZ businesses.

Path2NZ outcomes

Following the Path2NZ workshop hosted by the Tonga Chamber of Commerce and Industry late last year, we are pleased to report the Minister for Labour Commerce and Industries and Acting Minister for Agriculture, Food, Forestry & Fisheries The Hon. Lisiate 'Akolo lead a trade mission to NZ from 14-18 April 2009. The trade mission included a number of private sector representatives that attended the Path2NZ workshop.

The Mission's primary objective was to explore market access opportunities for Tongan produce, especially traditional root crops and vegetables. Meetings were held with New Zealand's biggest fresh produce importers and distributors including Progressive, Foodstuffs, Turners and Growers, Fresh Direct and Market Gardeners. The Mission also included discussions about improving Tonga's commodity pathway protocols with the NZ biosecurity and quarantine authorities.
