The Umbrella Organisations

The Umbrella Organisations project is a joint project of the Tonga Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the National Economic Development Committee (NEDC). It endeavours to develop Umbrella Organisations to represent the industry sectors. These organisations then represent their industry sector to Government via the NEDC. For each industry sector a different approach has been taken according to need.

As of August 2010, 4 UMOs have been implemented by a sub-committee composed of facilitators representing the different private sector industries in Tonga, and more are still being developed. The 4 UMOs that have been validated by Government are:

• Fishing Industry Association of Tonga (FIAT)
• Growers Federation (GroFed)
• Tourism Tonga (TT)
• Manufacturers Association of Tonga (MAT)

The UMOs that are still in their development phase are:

• Professional Services (PS)
